Meerut, Nov 10 (ENA)  Kanohar Lal Trust Society was established to provide education to under privileged girls in this town who have been unable to study for various reasons.  Most of them come from families who live in villages on the outskirts of Meerut and cannot afford to send their girls to school, said Principal, Kanohar Lal Postgraduate Girls College, Maya Gahlot.

Speaking on the sidelines of Saarthak 2015, a two day annual exhibition organised by students of eight institutions that come under the purview of the Trust, she said that the institutions would like to empower girls so they make a significant contribution to society, regardless of where they live or move on to in the future, whether in Meerut or elsewhere.

About the event, she said it promoted camaraderie, leadership, helping students identify skills they were unaware they had, and parents to see their children in a different light from what they are at home.

Saarthak provides an opportunity for activity based learning, Gahlot added.  Students select topics that are either difficult or boring and make graphic presentations using colourful charts, models, quizzes or games.  The process enables students to learn and understand terms of the subject far better than what is taught in the classroom.

Each year, there has been noticeable improvement in quality and content of the event as also the technique of presentation by students, she pointed out.

About five decades ago, education was not a priority for girls in and around Meerut and Village Sonda in Ghaziabad.  Even those who got an opportunity to study did so just to while away time until they were married.  It was to further the access to education to girls and women that the late Mr. Seth Kanohar Lal Singhal in 1968 established the Kanohar Lal Trust Society.

Today, at any given time, over 7500 students study at the various institutions founded and run by the Trust while several million others have received their education and are serving in a variety of roles.

“To provide education to equip students to play a meaningful role at home, at the workshop or in the society, with an emphasis on their employability,” is the mission of the Trust.

Institutions founded and managed by the Trust are: Kanohar Lal Postgraduate Girls College (Meerut), Chameli Devi Durga Prasad Girls Degree College (Sonda, Ghaziabad), Kanohar Lal Kishan Sahay Inter College (Meerut), Trishla Devi Kanohar Lal Balika Inter College (Meerut), Chameli Devi Durga Prasad Smarak Kanya Inter College (Sonda); Kanohar Lal Kanya Inter College (Saket, Meerut); Trishla Devi Kanohar Lal Balika Junior High School (Meerut); and Shree Durga Primary Pathshala (Sonda).
